Tian Yuan No. 4 - Purple Cloud Pea

"Tian Yuan No. 4" purple vetch, also known as red flower grass, is a biennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, specifically the Astragalus genus. It is often sown in late rice fields during the autumn as a green manure for early rice. This plant not only enhances soil fertility, improves soil quality, and protects the ecological environment of farmland, but also increases rice yield and improves quality. Additionally, it has a high yield, rich protein content, and is abundant in various minerals and vitamins. Its stems and leaves are tender and juicy, making it a palatable forage.

Product Description

"Tian Yuan No. 4" purple vetch, also known as red flower grass, is a biennial herbaceous plant of the legume family, often sown in late rice fields in autumn as a base fertilizer for early rice. It can improve soil fertility, enhance soil quality, and protect the ecological environment of farmland, while also increasing rice yield and improving quality. At the same time, it has a high yield, rich protein content, and is rich in various minerals and vitamins. Its stems and leaves are tender and juicy, making it a good green fodder.

Habitual Characteristics

The main root of purple vetch is relatively thick, generally penetrating 40-50 cm into the soil. Root nodules can grow on the main root, lateral roots, and fine roots on the surface. The plant height is generally 80-120 cm, and the weight of 1,000 seeds is 3-3.5 grams.

Purple vetch prefers a cool climate, with the optimal growth temperature being 15-20°C. During the seedling stage, growth is slow below 8°C; after spring, the growth rate significantly increases. Although purple vetch is relatively resistant to moisture, waterlogging in the field is very detrimental to its growth, and in severe cases, it can even lead to death. Therefore, soil that is easy to drain should be chosen. The soil requirements are not strict.

Utilization Methods

(1) "Tian Yuan No. 4" purple vetch has strong nitrogen-fixing ability and is an excellent green manure. During the peak flowering period, it can fix 75-120 kg of nitrogen per hectare on average. Generally, about 15 days before transplanting rice seedlings, the green manure should be crushed and incorporated into the field, and it is more suitable to plow during the peak flowering period, as this is when both yield and nutrients reach their peak. For green manure, about 1,000-1,500 kg per mu should be crushed. It is best to cut the plants into two or three segments, lay them on the field to sun slightly, making the stems and leaves soft, then apply 15-25 kg of lime, and then plow it in. Shallow water should be returned to the field, and the soil should be leveled before transplanting.

(2) Purple vetch is also a good fodder for various livestock. During the flowering period, the dry matter contains crude protein as high as 25.8%, with a digestibility rate of over 70%. The methods for feeding pigs with purple vetch generally include: ① Fresh feeding: it is best to mix 1 kg of concentrate feed with 6-7 kg of fresh purple vetch; ② Silage feeding: pigs love to eat silage made from "Tian Yuan No. 4" purple vetch, which can generally be mixed with about 50%. The advantages of silage are long storage time, large storage volume, low cost, and minimal nutrient loss, with good palatability. Ruminants such as cattle, sheep, and horses can also use purple vetch as fodder, but they should not eat too much to avoid causing bloating.

(3) Purple vetch has strong honey-producing capabilities and can be developed into honey tea and dried vegetables. It is also a major source of nectar and has high medicinal value.

(4) Purple vetch has a long flowering period, blooming from March to May, with flowers ranging from pink to purplish-red. It can enrich the color of landscape plants through dotting, scattered planting, and pairing with shrubs.

Suitable Cutting Period

When "Tian Lvy No. 4" purple vetch is used as green manure, it is more suitable to plow during the peak flowering period; when used as fodder, it is advisable to cut it at the beginning of flowering.

Key Points of Cultivation Technology

The suitable sowing period for "Tian Yuan No. 4" purple vetch is from early September to mid-October, with a sowing amount generally being 2-5 kg per mu. The yield generally increases with the sowing amount, but excessive sowing will not be effective. In the north, 4-5 kg is suitable, while in the south, 2-3 kg is better. For intercropping with rice, broadcasting is the main method, and the sowing should be uniform. For dry land, low-yield fields, or when the sowing amount is small, wide-row sowing or dense spot sowing can also be used. After spring, when purple vetch grows rapidly, applying 3-5 kg of urea per mu can significantly increase its yield. In addition, in areas with suitable conditions, applying organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer has a good effect on the growth of purple vetch seedlings, nodule development, and overall seedling health. Generally, the harvesting time should be controlled during the peak flowering period, with fresh grass yield reaching 3,000-5,000 kg per mu.
