The weather in early spring is volatile, and it is a wave of cold air at every turn, and a strong drop in temperature makes the flowers and plants in the nursery and the greening project at a loss. Recently, rain and snow have appeared in the central and eastern regions of my country, and the temperature fluctuates frequently in many places.
Cold spring is the most likely to cause problems with flower seedlings. What to do? Let's start with the damage caused by the cold ice and snow.
Type of injury
1. Mechanical injury The main symptoms of this type of injury include broken trees, cracked trunks, separation of bark and xylem, severe bending of trees, etc. This is because the temperature is below 0°C. After snowfall or icing, the volume of snow or icing on the tree will increase, and the weight of the accumulated ice and snow will exceed the limit that the tree can bear, and the tree will bend or break under pressure. Generally, young trees less than 3 meters in height are mostly crushed, and trees over 4 meters in height are mostly crushed.
2. Physiological injury This type of injury is a phenomenon caused by severe damage to various tissue cells of trees caused by low-temperature freezing.
After plants are frozen, they generally show poor growth. When the leaves are frozen, the color of the leaves becomes white and paper-like in light cases, and wilt and withered in severe cases. When the branches and trunks are frozen, the cortex of the branches and trunks forms small cracks, which can easily lead to the invasion of diseases and cause diseases of the branches and trunks; the inside of the branches and trunks are blocked by resinous substances, nutrient and water transmission are blocked, the blocked parts are discolored and necrotic, and the upper branches and leaves lack water. withered. The root system is frozen, and grows slowly or stops growing when it is lighter. When it is severe, the roots turn black and rot.
It should be noted that the freezing damage to trees does not necessarily happen to only one kind. In most cases, mechanical injuries will be accompanied by physical injuries. However, when physical injury occurs, mechanical injury does not necessarily occur.
In addition, the occurrence of freezing damage is not limited to the cold northern regions. The freezing damage in the southern region cannot be ignored, especially the newly transplanted plants, marginal tree species, exotic tree species, etc. were severely frozen last year, and the frozen plants are not limited to trees, hedges, shrubs, lawns, flowers, ground covers, etc. Suffered extensive frostbite.
In the face of widespread frost damage, timely rescue is the key, and it must be prevented and controlled in advance. It will be too late to wait for the characteristics of frost damage to manifest before taking measures.
Responses
1. Deal with mechanical injuries. According to the severity of the trees being crushed and bent by the snow, different methods shall be adopted for treatment.
The fallen trees can be replanted in time according to the weather and soil freezing conditions. The branches that are crushed by ice and snow should be pruned neatly, and then the wound healing agent should be applied in time. If the root system is damaged due to lodging, it must be pruned and disinfected, and then replanted. After covering the soil, it can be covered with straw curtains or insulation cloth for heat preservation, and at the same time, support work is done well.
If it is a tall tree with broken trunk or side branches, trim off the broken branches to ensure that the cut is flat and at an angle of 30° to 45° with the ground. When pruning, pay attention to "light cuts for light injuries, heavy cuts for severe injuries". After trimming, no water can accumulate on the cut surface of the wound to avoid decay. It is better to apply a healing agent after trimming, which can promote wound healing. For trees that are broken from the root neck, it is recommended to saw directly from the root neck and replant it.
2. Deal with physiological damage. For flowering shrubs, after the temperature has risen steadily above 10°C, spray plant antifreeze + functional foliar fertilizer with amino acids, humic acid, alginic acid, etc., if there are microbial organic matter liquid fertilizers, the effect will be better. Water enough to turn green water in time, and sprinkle organic fertilizer during the germination period to strengthen water and fertilizer management. For seedlings whose branches or branches need to be recovered from frostbite, spray the integrated fertilizer and medicine product to avoid disease and necrosis of frostbitten branches and speed up the healing of frostbitten parts.
For large trees, if the freezing damage is not very serious, and the temperature stably rises above 10℃, you can spray plant antifreeze + functional foliar fertilizer, amino acids, humic acid, alginic acid, etc., or microbial organic matter liquid fertilizer, etc. Spray again every 10 to 20 days.
Trees with severe frost damage often have different degrees of frostbite on the main trunk or main backbone branches, which are easily infected by pathogens to form dry rot. The intuitive manifestations are ulcers, fluids, and glues. In the spring when the temperature rises quickly, as the leaves evaporate more water, the water transport of the diseased branches is greatly reduced, which will cause the branches and leaves to dehydration and die, and in severe cases, the entire tree will die.
Therefore, for a small area of dry bark that is frozen, scrape off the decayed part of the trunk, and then apply thiophanate-methyl + wound healing film. If a large area of dry bark is damaged, thiophanate-methyl can be added to a whitening agent such as a liquid film and mixed and sprayed on the trunk to prevent further damage to the dry bark. For trees with poor growth, combined with fluid infusion, spraying foliar fertilizer, root fertilization and other measures, the effect of promoting restoration is more obvious.
After the frozen branches are pruned, the whole plant should be sprayed with S-resistin in time to enhance plant resistance. At the same time, whiten the trunk to postpone the time of germination and flowering, so as to avoid the harm of early spring cold again. In addition, a transparent liquid film can also be sprayed to protect the leaves and buds from freezing again.
For the restoration of the roots, attention should be paid to loose the soil, dig out tree holes, pour enough green water to cooperate with the application of organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer to speed up the restoration of tree vigor and nutritional supplement. After the temperature rises, use a rooting agent to irrigate in time to promote roots. If the root neck rots, scrape the rotted part and use a rooting agent and soil disinfectant to irrigate or spray to disinfect the root system and the soil together. After treatment, water-soluble fertilizer containing humic acid can be regularly watered to rejuvenate the root system. The trees with weak tree status and poor site conditions should be given special care.
The treatment of frost damage is of urgency. Taking comprehensive measures to reduce and repair frost damage is the first priority for the beginning of the spring of this year. In addition, after the plants are frozen, they are easily attacked by pests and diseases, and the control and management of pests must be strengthened in the follow-up. For frost-damaged plants, add fertilizers after overwintering and water them in a timely manner to promote the recovery of the injured plants as soon as possible; it can also be combined with spraying a mixture of foliar fertilizer and growth-promoting regulators to promote the recovery of branches and leaves.
