Information

Hongye Barberry is a deciduous shrub belonging to the genus Berberis of the family Berberis, and it is a variety of Berberis. Light-loving, slightly shade-tolerant, cold-resistant, barren-resistant, pruning-resistant, red-brown branches, elliptical solitary or clustered leaves, red all year round. Flowers from May to June, yellow-white, bright red and beautiful after the fruit is ripe. It can be used to arrange flower beds and flower mirrors. It is an important tree species for color block combination in landscaping.

Propagation: The propagation of Red Barberry mostly uses methods such as sowing, cutting, and layering.

1. Seeding

In autumn, the fruits are ripe and harvested in sand. In April of the following year, the seedbed was sown on a sterile, loose and fertile seedbed, covered with 2 to 3 cm of soil and watered so that the seedbed was kept moist and free of water. When the seedlings are 3 to 5 cm tall, apply a 5% all-element liquid fertilizer once a week, and transplant them in the field at a spacing of 5x10 cm in the following spring.

2. Layering

In May, the lower branches of Barberry are peeled at intervals of 15 cm, with a width of 0.5 to 1 cm, reaching the xylem. Coat the girdling part with 10 parts per million naphthalene acetic acid solution, and then bury the branches in the girdles. Make sure that a small branch group is exposed to facilitate the progress of photosynthesis. Keep the soil moist, take roots in about 2 months, and cut off the mother plants after autumn and plant them separately.

3. Cuttings

Cutting is an important way to propagate red barberry. For cuttings, use wooden boxes or pots with larger diameters less, and use seedbeds for cuttings. The slotting bed should be selected in a place with high dryness and no accumulation of water, and the cutting substrate should be loose, fertile, and well-ventilated. Generally, the slotting bed is 1 meter wide and 4 to 5 meters long. It is surrounded by bricks with a height of 50 cm and drainage holes are left around. The bottom is cushioned with 10 cm thick gravel, and the top is natural mulch made for many years under broad-leaved or coniferous trees. The substrate should be disinfected with 50% carbendazim powder, and 5 grams of medicament per 100 kg of soil should be applied. After mixing the soil, covering with plastic film for 3 to 5 days can kill many pathogenic microorganisms in the soil well.

4. From September to September, cut 1 to 2 year old or semi-ligninized branches of the current year, cut into 12 to 15 cm each, cut the cut into an oblique shape, and retain 1 to 3 leaves. Put the lower part of the cuttings into 1/100O potassium permanganate solution for 24 hours, which can disinfect and promote the rooting of the cuttings. Punch holes with bamboo chips, insert the cuttings into the seedbed vertically, and irrigate them thoroughly. Set up a plastic film scaffold in time after insertion, covering 80% to 40% of the shading net, (with the rooting of the cuttings, gradually changing the shading net with high light transmittance) according to the dry and wet thermometer index, timely spray water and windproof to ensure the relative humidity of the air Above 80% and the temperature is about 25℃, such environmental conditions can make the cuttings' survival rate reach more than 90%.

5. Plastic surgery

When the red leaf barberry is planted in a single pot or ground, it is usually pruned into barberry balls of great ornamental value. But according to its characteristics of pumping upright branches, resistance to pruning, and strong sprouting and branching ability, the tree trunk method can be used to cultivate the elegant tree posture, and the messy branches and useless tillers can be cut in time to make jungle-style bonsai or landscape bonsai, etc. .

6. Picking leaves

Red Barberry is a good foliage plant. Remove the old leaves before the end of August, apply a nitrogen-based liquid fertilizer before and after the leaves, and spray 0.1% urea at the same time. New leaves will grow in about 20 days. The leaves are bright red and greenish. They are very beautiful and can be enjoyed indoors in winter until mid-December.

7. Fertilizer and water management

After the seedlings are transplanted, there should be enough fertilizer and water for their growth. In the case of applying the decomposed base fertilizer for foot retting, apply liquid fertilizer once every 20 days, and spray 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate once a week during the flowering and fruit period. A small amount of insecticides, fungicides, and chemical fertilizers can be added to the irrigation water, which can eliminate insects and prevent diseases, and provide sufficient fertilizer for plant growth.

8. Pest control

Red leaf barberry has fewer pests and diseases, and occasional aphids and scale insects can be sprayed with cigarette butt extract plus 10 times water, and the effective rate is more than 90%. For the damage of borer pests, the branches can be cut and burned in time or injected with DDVP, and then sealed with cotton wool. The effective rate is 100%.
