It is not easy for green tree seedlings to survive through cutting propagation, mainly manifested in the difficulty of rooting cuttings. Many methods to promote rooting have been summarized in production practice:
Selection of cuttings for seedlings
To improve the survival rate and obtain excellent new plants, the cuttings themselves are an important factor. The cuttings should have excellent characteristics of the variety, be robust, and free from pests and diseases, with suitable thickness. New branches, elongated branches, and weak branches are relatively difficult to survive. For hard wood cuttings, 1-2 year old branches with short internodes, large buds, and sufficient nutrients should be selected, and the middle part of the branch should be cut as cuttings. However, for species like Juniperus and Cedrus, the tip with a terminal bud is preferred. For softwood cuttings, select healthy, well-developed, and pest-free current year's shoots as cuttings.
Processing of cuttings for seedlings
There are many physical treatment methods, including mechanical treatment, softening treatment, drying treatment, hot water treatment, increasing bottom temperature, high-temperature electrostatic treatment, ultrasonic treatment, low-temperature treatment, etc.
1. Hot water treatment: Also known as warm water method. This involves soaking the lower part of the cuttings in warm water before cutting, which can promote rooting. This method is suitable for species that contain substances that inhibit rooting, such as conifer seedlings.
2. Chemical treatment methods. There are many available agents, mainly including plant growth regulators, common chemical reagents, and nutrients.
3. Softening treatment: Before taking cuttings, wrap the branches with black cloth, waterproof black paper, or soil, and after about 3 weeks of growth, the shaded branches will turn white and soften, making it easier to root when cut. This is because darkness can promote the formation of root primordial tissue. Softening treatment is only effective for some woody seedlings and only for branches that are actively growing.
4. Increasing bottom temperature: When performing hard wood cuttings in early spring, the air temperature rises faster than the soil temperature, making it difficult for cuttings to survive. It is advisable to increase the bottom temperature of the cutting bed, using methods such as electric heating wires or hot water pipes.
5. Mechanical treatment: Methods such as ring barking, wounding, or girdling. These are used for woody seedlings that are difficult to root. During the growing season, first ring cut, wound, or tie the base of the branches with hemp rope to prevent the upward transfer of nutrients from the upper part of the branch to the lower part, thus concentrating nutrients at the injured site, and then cut the cuttings from this site for propagation. Due to the sufficient nutrients, not only is it easy to root, but the seedlings also grow vigorously, resulting in a high survival rate.

Cultivation of Red Leaf Barberry
The red-leaf barberry is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family and the Berberis genus, and it is a variety of barberry. It prefers sunlight, is somewhat shade-tolerant, cold-resistant, drought-resistant, and can withstand pruning. The branches are reddish-brown, and the leaves are oval-shaped, either solitary or clustered, remaining red throughout the year. The flowers bloom from May to June, are yellowish-white, and the fruits turn bright red and beautiful when ripe. It can be used to decorate flower beds and flower mirrors, and is an important tree species for color block combinations in landscape greening.
To take good care of flowers, watering them is crucial. However, many novice flower growers tend to be overly diligent, taking care of their plants even more frequently than they eat, and they feel that watering the plants a few times a day is still not enough. This can easily lead to root rot and death of the plants, which is indeed quite frustrating. In that case, why not grow a few water-loving flowers? The more you water them, the better they grow, making them perfect for those who love to water their plants frequently.
